Every city has its own version of pests – from different insects to rodents and reptiles. Florida’s warm, wonderful atmosphere not only attracts people to the state, but is also home to creatures that enjoy its weather. If you’re new to the area, here are some pests you should look out for in Sarasota and what to do if you find them.
Termites
One of the most prominent pests to look out for is termites. These bugs rapidly eat through structural timbers and destroy plaster, foundations and many other types of building materials. Termites cause millions of dollars in damage every year in Florida. If you’re afraid of termite infestations, consider investing in liquid or non-liquid repellents.
Ants
Of all the ant species in Sarasota, the carpenter ant is the most commonly reported and can cause some costly damage. These ants are attracted to the tiniest crumb and can be found nesting in dark, moist areas of a home such as close to plumbing or damp areas around doors. Try and keep these spaces dry and clean of any debris that ants might find attractive.
Cockroaches
No matter what state you live in, cockroaches can be found any and everywhere.
These bugs contaminate food, damage books and can spread disease. They typically nest in tiny cracks, corners and other tight, damp spaces, so if you’re on the market for a home, be sure to check those places when you tour.
Rodents
Rats and mice are common pests homeowners deal with, especially during the winter months. Rodents can contaminate food with their droppings and spread diseases like salmonella.
Reduce rodent and cockroach activity in your home by ensuring your kitchen is well-swept, dispose of any crumbs or food from your counters, and store dry food in plastic or glass containers.
