Home safety tips for when things go “bump” in the night
Nothing is spookier than being home alone and hearing a strange, unexplainable noise. Avoid calling Ghostbusters and give yourself peace of mind by amping up your home’s security. From alarm systems to budget-friendly, DIY home security tools, there are proactive measures you can take to protect your space. “Beware” of intruders with these tips.
Locked and loaded
Locking your doors and windows may not be enough if you don’t have high-quality locks. Ensure all exterior doors have a deadbolt, which makes it more difficult for intruders to break in. While you’re at it, check out door frames and hinges and check to see if they’re strong enough to endure an attempted break-in – older doors or exposed hinges can pose an unnecessary risk.
If you have the budget, consider upgrading to smart locks. These locks allow you to engage with them remotely and don’t require a key.
Security to keep you safe and sound
Regardless of how safe and lovely a neighborhood or community is, there is always an opportunity for an unpredictable situation to strike. In case of these emergencies, I always suggest my clients purchase a home security system. Most security systems are affordable and easy to install and the added bonus of feeling safe and secure in your space is worth the expense.
Certain security systems also include cameras, which can alert you if there’s movement in your yard or on your front porch. And with the holidays approaching, these could come in handy when you have packages delivered or guests coming into town.
Shed some light on the situation
Having a well-lit property will help ward off intruders. Think about adding lighting in your front and back yards and along paths – this will also help you spot any abnormal activity going on. Automated lights with infrared motion sensors are also excellent deterrents for intruders.
Beware of dog
Whether or not you’re an animal person, having a sign that says you have a K9 could be the protection you need to ward off any unwelcome visitors. You can also put up signage in your front yard or window with your security system company to create a warning for anyone who might enter.
